Star Gazers
|
Just a heads up to anybody that has kids or is just keen on a bit of star gazing. With the weather set to be clear down south on Tuesday night then look out for the annual Perseid meteor shower which with clear stars and a dark sky could be quite dramatic. Anything up to 100 shooting stars per hour. Get away from any light pollution if you can for an even better view.

Sunset on the south coast is 8.34 so the same approx for anybody hereabouts I'd say. Suggest from 9 pm - midnight will be best as after then the moon rises and will cause more 'light pollution'.
Listen out for the 'cracklers' as they're a bit special.

Not ideal but you can still get impressive views, using a long hollow tube can work too, but you will look mental.

Jupiter and Saturn both visible looking SSW at about 11 at night. Jupiter is the brighter of the 2 but they're really close to each other. (well visually anyway... before some pedant tells me they're actually millions of miles apart)

I think both Jupiter & Saturn are visible in the late evening (certainly from Muscat, unless Stellarium is telling me porkies). The moon follows shortly afterwards (not so good for shooting stargazers, that).

I have used a borrowed pair of 10x50s before to look at the sky. Obviously not as good as a high mags telescope, but still worth a good that'sall you have. There was still too much light pollution, but that was a separate issue. I got round the tripod issue by lying on my back on the ground. Far less shake.

Not unless you've got a tripod. Too much movement really. You'll see plenty with the naked eye though.
Really is a good thing to do, particularly if you've got younger kids.

Do bins work with meteor showers? Whenever I've watched them I've needed a wide field of vision to spot the streaks and then not enough time to grab anything to look through.
